Africa
Why Africa? Africa is continually called a dying continent, a dark continent, a corrupt continent. Humanitarians rush to Africa every year with aid and other strategies to save the dying continent. But despite these efforts, Africa is going backwards -- hatred, wars, illnesses, poverty and corruption run rampant. These are simple symptoms of a serious condition of our hearts and minds which can only be addressed with the cooperation and leadership of African churches – a powerful force for the salvation of the continent.
Why now? “If my people who are called by my
name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then will I hear them from heaven and will forgive
their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
The real need of Africa is not the food or clothes that humanitarians
are giving away. When two neighbors who lived together for many years woke
up one morning and begin to kill one another, soap and food will not calm
them down.
The Prophet Hosea voiced the heart of God in the 4th Chapter saying
that God’s people are destroyed from lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6)
Africa today is in desperate need of a vision. The prevailing
conditions of Africa are hopelessness, insecurity, depression, uncertainly,
emotional and social trauma, discouragement and despair. The level of religious
conflict is high as ever before; the economy is collapsing day after day,
political instability, epidemics, and tribal conflicts.
Change is needed and Time is NOW!
The chaos of Africa demands leadership that can see beyond the now
into a preferred future that has the courage to inspire a new generation
to strive for change. Lack of leadership and poor management has facilitated
the deterioration of the conditions in which colonialism has left us.
Resolving the African enigma will require endurance and commitment.
It will take time because change is a process, but it is possible to bring
about change.
My invitation is to you: You who understand that the change so needed
is not from the outside, but rather from within.
